Dear Nozzlehead: I know you’ve written about direct and indirect fire attack before, but so many studies, blogs and articles have come out in the last year about it, making this very confusing. I also notice that there seem to be two “camps” on these studies on attacking the fire, venting, flow paths and things like that. I’m getting really confused and not sure what to do at our next fire. Help!

Dear Lil’ Nozzle,
Thanks for the lil’ email! I’m glad you wrote because I’m really amazed at some of the writings that have been out there about the recent fire studies. Arguing with the fire science is like arguing that 2 + 2 doesn’t equal 4. I don’t care how emotional you get or what some “dream you had” conveyed to you, 2 + 2 will always equal 4. It’s kinda the same with fire science. Simply put, WE KNOW that when water is applied to fire, things get better.
