What: UL is conducting a 3-year study titled “Study of the Impact of Fire Attack Utilizing Interior and Exterior Streams on Firefighter Safety and Occupant Survival.” The purpose is to increase firefighter safety by providing the fire service with credible scientific information, developed from full-scale fire testing in representative single family homes, on the impact of interior and transitional fire attack tactics on firefighter safety and trapped occupants to improve training and decision making abilities on the fireground. You are invited to watch a portion of the 25 full-scale fire experiments.
Why: We want to continue our impact on firefighter and public safety by educating the fire service about fire dynamics and the impact of different fire suppression tactics. We have studied the three main types of fire service ventilation tactics and now it is time to focus on fire suppression and its impact on both firefighters and occupants. We also want to open our doors so the fire service can watch these tests first hand.
When: These experiments will be conducted over a period between February 25th and March 18th. The testing schedule varies between 1 and 2 burns each day, utilizing two 1620 square foot ranch homes. Visitors will be allowed on the following days: February 29th, March 2nd, March 14th, and March 18th. Visitors who attend on these days will be able to witness 2 experiments.
Where: All of the testing will be conducted in UL’s Large Fire Laboratory (Building 11) on the UL Campus in Northbrook, IL. Please see the Information tab for detailed location.
Who: The testing will be conducted by the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute and registration is open to everyone and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to attend a date that has already filled up, we will accept people off of a wait-list as resources allow.
